Forecourt Signage

Forecourt signage needs to guide drivers quickly, keep people safe and still leave room for promotions. BP Signs designs, makes and installs forecourt signs for fuel and convenience sites across Durban, eThekwini, Umhlanga, Pinetown and the KZN North Coast.

Forecourt Signage

Signs That Keep Traffic Moving on Busy Forecourts

A forecourt has to do several jobs at once. Drivers need to see where to enter, where to exit, where to queue, where to park, and where the shop entrance sits. At the same time, the site has to show prices, promotions, opening hours and safety notices without creating clutter. On a busy Durban site, poor sign placement can slow vehicles down and make the forecourt harder to manage during peak periods.

We work from Briardene, Durban North and handle both new installations and upgrades on existing sites. That usually includes directional signs, canopy and price-point panels, entry and exit boards, pump number markers, light boxes, window frosting for back-of-house areas, and promotional signs for convenience offers. Where the site gets strong sun or coastal moisture, we recommend materials and finishes that hold up better in heat, rain and salt air.

  • Directional signs for entry, exit and traffic flow
  • Price boards and promotional panels
  • Safety signs for no smoking, no entry and spill control points
  • Light boxes for visibility after dark and during load-shedding
  • Window frosting and contra-vision for offices, storerooms and glass sections

Typical Forecourt Signage Sets We Supply

Every forecourt has a different layout, but most need a mix of directional, promotional and safety signage. We start with a site survey so we can measure sight lines, vehicle movement and available fixing points. From there, we set out what should be printed, what should be fabricated, and where each item should go. That avoids signs being hidden by poles, awnings or parked vehicles.

A typical set may include vinyl-cut lettering for rules and wayfinding, digitally printed panels for specials, Chromadek signs for durable outdoor use, Perspex panels for cleaner internal or glass-mounted sections, and ABS signs where a lighter fabricated panel is needed. If the site needs visible signage after hours, light boxes and illuminated panels are often the best choice, especially near the shopfront or roadside. Roll-up banners are useful for short-term promotions at the convenience store entrance, but they should not replace fixed wayfinding signs.

  • Site survey and measurement
  • Artwork setup and layout planning
  • Large format printing with laminate where needed
  • Vinyl cutting for wording, arrows and compliance notices
  • Sign fabrication, installation and later maintenance visits

Planning the Layout So Drivers Read It in Seconds

Forecourt signage must be read fast. A driver should understand the site in one glance, not after turning twice or stopping in the wrong place. We normally plan the layout from the road inward, then from the entrance to the pumps and finally to the shopfront. That order helps reduce confusion and makes the site feel organised.

Good placement depends on mounting height, vehicle approach speed, line of sight and lighting. Signs at eye level are useful for pedestrians, but traffic signs need to be seen earlier. Promotional panels work best where customers already slow down, such as near the store entrance or queue point. Safety notices need to be close to the risk they refer to, not hidden on a wall 20 metres away. If your site has a lot of glass or reflective surfaces, contra-vision film can help keep privacy inside the office or back area without blocking visibility from the public side.

It is also worth planning for power cuts and after-hours trading. A light box may look fine in daylight but if the site depends on evening traffic, the illumination needs to remain visible when the grid is down or the area is affected by load-shedding. We also advise on sign positions that are less exposed to direct spray, exhaust heat and repeated cleaning around pump islands.

Common Mistakes on Fuel Station Signage Projects

Many forecourt problems come from signs being added one by one without a full plan. That can leave the site looking crowded, with too many messages in one place and not enough guidance where it is actually needed. Another common issue is choosing a material only because it is cheaper on paper, then replacing it soon after because it faded, warped or lifted in the wind.

For coastal sites around Durban and the North Coast, moisture and salt can affect fittings, brackets and printed surfaces. If the wrong adhesive is used on glass or painted steel, the sign may start lifting at the edges within months. Another issue is poor size planning. A small board on a large forecourt gets lost, while a board that is too large can block sight lines or clash with local signage rules. Municipal bylaws and property management requirements must be checked before fabrication starts.

  • Using one sign type for every message
  • Placing safety notices where nobody reads them
  • Ignoring wind exposure on open forecourts
  • Skipping proper surface prep before installation
  • Choosing finishes that are not suitable for coastal humidity

Budget Ranges for Forecourt Signage in Rand

Budget depends on the size of the site, the number of signs and whether you need fabrication, printing, installation and removal of old signage. A small forecourt refresh with a few directional boards, window graphics and basic safety signs may start from about R8 500 to R18 000. A mid-sized site with printed panels, fabricated signs, lamination and a light box can sit between R25 000 and R65 000. Larger projects with multiple pump identifiers, illuminated elements, canopy branding and full shopfront work can move from R75 000 upwards.

If you are only replacing one section, such as a price board or a damaged fascia panel, we can quote for that part alone. Refurbishment is often a sensible option when the frame is still sound and only the face panels or graphics need replacing. We also handle removals and maintenance visits when older signs need cleaning, re-fixing or updating after a layout change. For sites across eThekwini, Umhlanga, Pinetown, Phoenix, Verulam, Tongaat and Ballito, transport and access conditions can affect pricing, especially where work has to be done after hours or with traffic control.

Our team includes Bongani Patrick Zulu, Nokuthula Mkhize, Sashen Naidoo, Anele Dlamini, Priya Govender and Lindokuhle Khumalo, so the work can move from first enquiry through to install with one point of contact. Clients reach us through the enquiry form on our contact page, and we then arrange the next step based on the site and the sign set you need.

What to Have Ready Before You Request a Quote

To get a useful quote, it helps to have the forecourt address, photos of the site and a rough idea of what must change. If you already know the size of the sign face or have an existing frame, that makes pricing much quicker. If not, we can do a site survey and measure it properly before fabrication begins. That is usually the best route for sites with older structures or mixed materials.

Try to note whether the signs are for permanent use, seasonal promotions or a full rebrand. Also tell us if the work needs to be done while the site is trading, because that affects access and installation planning. In busy forecourts, the safest option is often to schedule night work or off-peak hours so the pumps and customer flow are not interrupted.

Questions we get asked

What signs are usually needed on a fuel station forecourt?

Most sites need directional signs, price and promotional panels, safety notices, pump identifiers, shopfront graphics and sometimes light boxes for night visibility.

Can you work on a live forecourt that stays open?

Yes. We plan the installation around trading hours, access routes and vehicle movement so the site can keep operating where possible.

Do you handle both new signs and replacements?

Yes. We supply new forecourt signage, remove old panels, refurbish usable frames and return for maintenance visits when needed.
